At the Gallery 9th-12th
February
I arrived at the gallery nice and early so I could help paint
and clean before we could start laying out our work. I was surprised to see
that everything appeared to be done. With the walls and floor relatively clean,
there was only one makeshift wall that needed painting and the odd mark here
or there. This meant that there was a lot less for us to do than we all thought.
With a little bit of paint, and an extra wall in the centre of the room, the
gallery space would be ready.
After an hour of waiting for the van to get here, and
another 30 minutes for the plinths to be unloaded, we could start sorting
things out. First of all we had to find which plinths were ours and make sure
they weren't damaged on the way to the gallery. Luckily all was fine with a
couple of them having only little marks that could be painted over. Mine was
fine with some small marks that I could quick paint over. I was glad that I did
the majority of work at the college. Leaving it all till the last week would
have been stressful. With my plinth drying and the wall up, I had little left
to do seeing as there were no tools yet to fix my plinth. I like everyone,
thought that today would be mostly painting and cleaning.
I got to the gallery a little later than normal because of
English. I wanted to get my plinth sorted today. Once that was done I could
help out where ever I was needed so that everything would be ready for
Thursday. After waiting for some of the tools to arrive, I could drill a hole
in my plinth, cut the pole down to size and glue the wood the pole would sit
in. This took a little while to do and I knew I had to wait overnight for the
glue to dry. The cold in the room wasn't helping and everything seemed to take
three times as long to dry than normal. I had planned most of the measuring,
placing and fitting out at college, knowing that I'd have little time if
anything went wrong. Leaving the glue to dry, it was the end of the day and I
was happy that everything will be done by tomorrow.
With my plinth sorted I could now pick out a spot for my
work to go. I already had a place in mind, but I knew that it wasn't definite
until I got the all clear from Graham. Everything had to work well together and
I had to take into account others work and needs. Needless to say that there
was a lot of moving and rearranging. The only thing I wanted was a light over
my work. It was important for it to get a good light source so that it would
shine and show off the acrylic. After much moving, it seemed that my piece
found a place and I was happy with the spot. I then had to make some small
adjustments so everything was stable and I was finished setting up my work. I
then could go home and start making some food for the show, four batches of
brownies and some drink.
With today being the day of the exhibition, I had to do a
bit of running round in the morning to get the food, drink and cups ready. I
went into the gallery to help everyone that needed it and made sure that the
cups, napkins and tablecloths were alright for the show. Everything was coming
together and I could see that everyone had finished, or only had one or two
final touches to do. So after helping with the cleaning, painting and running
round I could go home get the food and drink and get back for six.
