Smarter Research 5th March
Today was very much about evaluation, with a quick catch up
of everyone's project. After each person finished telling us where they were up
to, we could get some feedback and advice on what we could look at next and
what we might not have thought about.
Once I had explained my project, I could get some feedback
from the others. A lot of things like going and seeing the jewellery shops and
asking questions to the designers, were first to come up. These were all things
I planned to do on the weekend.
With the group giving each other new ideas and paths to
follow, I had many different ideas to keep my project going for years, let
alone months. Things like looking at the fashion industry, to how objects can
have identity in themselves.
From the talk, I liked the idea of looking at how portrait
artists have tried to capture the personality of the person they are painting
or drawing. Throughout the centuries, from kings and queens of old, to modern
day caricatures, they all have represented someone, but also captured the
subject's personality. Research in how they do this and the different ways they
try and find out the hidden traits of each person, will help me in doing the
same.
The other thing I need to look closely at is the contextual
side of my work. I have been researching artists that aren't modern, but I
could go back a bit further and look in the past how jewellery was a lot more
about personality and identity. With some being religious, and some being very
much about an identity of a tribe or group.
Another aspect of someone's personality are the clothes they
wear. This is indication of their taste, style and individuality. It can
indicate someone's creativity. The wearer can customise and choose pieces to
bring out something that represent themselves, be it loud and bold, or smart
and calm.
Today has been very useful for me. Having time to reflect,
but also getting others thoughts and ideas. I have many different things to
research. I would love to have the rest of the project just to do that. There
are so many things I could look into, I think that in the future I'll have to
come back and continue.
