FMP The Interview 10th March

The Interview

With the end of the week getting closer and my research stage coming to the end, I have to move on to the design of my piece of jewellery. l had an interview with the girl I chosen to be my client to see what sort of piece she thought would best suit her personality.

My client is one of the foundation students, Marriyah. I first approached her a couple of weeks back while we were talking about our projects. Once I explained what I was doing and that I still needed to find someone to base my jewellery on, she offered to help me with my work. I was delighted to work with Marriyah on my project. I've gotten to know her over the last couple months and we've talked about projects, ideas and given feedback and advice to each other many times. I'm excited to find out more Marriyah and what part of her personality she'd like me to focus on

I first asked her about what sort of jewellery she normally wears. The response I got was encouraging. She told me that she like something unique and unusual. When talking about her style, she likes something different than other people, something unique. This is a projection of her own personality and wearing the same as other people doesn't interest her.

This statement is what I was looking for. It is exactly the client that would come to a bespoke jeweller for a unique piece. Being different and having your own style is something that is hard to do today, especially with all the brands and mass production. I feel excited to work with someone who has the same view that I'm trying to convey in my project. Being a fashion student, I expected Marriyah to have her own style and views, so jewellery would be no different. The fact that she would want to have her own unique eye catching garments is no surprise.

I then asked her what sort of patterns she likes.

She told me that she likes detailed intricate designs, with unusual shapes and flowing patterns.

Personally I think this suits Marriyah's personality. She has a very calm presence on the surface even when stressed. This would match up with the flowing forms that can give a sense of calm. From talking to her, I know that there is a lot of emotion going on underneath her calmness, the detailed and intricate patterns would match this.

I asked if there was a style that she prefers?

The patterns and shapes of art deco is one of her favourite styles.

This fits in with her preferences for detailed intricate designs and unusual shapes as art deco has a very iconic style with many detailed patterns.

I then finished by asking about her favourite colours, and what colour metals she prefers?

Emerald green and silver seemed to be very one of her favourite colours. I think that it suits Marriyah's personality. A deep green is normally associated with wisdom, growth, harmony, endurance and hope. While silver can be associated with ornate, glamorous, graceful, sophisticated, and elegance.

With all my questions answered, I could then do some research on art deco and what sort of jewellery that style produced, as well as start thinking of what designs I'll be making.
